One of these technologies provided in our office is the IntraLase FS Laser, an advanced eye surgery procedure that we’d love to tell you more about!

What Is the IntraLase FS Laser?

The IntraLase FS Laser offers a way to provide bladeless laser vision correction eye surgery. Unlike alternative methods that may use a handheld, microkeratome (metal) blade to make an incision, this procedure uses a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser to cut a small flap in the cornea. This will create a thinner and more precise corneal flap for a patient.

How Does the IntraLase FS Laser Work?

Instead of using a microkeratome blade, the corneal flap will be created by applying tiny, rapid pulses of laser light. Each of these pulses will pass through the top layers of the cornea and form a microscopic bubble at a certain depth and position within the eye. As the laser scans back and forth, a uniform layer of bubbles will form just below the corneal surface. Your ophthalmologist will then make the corneal flap by gently separating the tissue in the area where the bubbles have formed. After that, the flap will be folded back so that the next step of the eye surgery can begin.

What Are the Advantages of the IntraLase FS Laser?

Some of the advantages of the IntraLase FS Laser include the following:

  • It’s a truly customized way to allow your ophthalmologist to tailor the flap on your cornea based on the shape of your eye. And since everyone’s eyes are shaped differently, it is very important to have a corneal flap that’s individualized to each patient’s needs.
  • By using a computer-calculated laser instead of a handheld blade, your Boca Raton, FL ophthalmologist is capable of making a more accurate cut, resulting in a more reliable result.
  • The creation of the flap will take less than 15 seconds per eye; the entire procedure will typically only take about 10 minutes.
  • It’s a safe and effective treatment that has been utilized countless times.
  • Studies have shown that both visual outcomes and patient satisfaction are much higher when this method is used.
