Signs That You Need Emergency Eye Care

Emergency eye care can be a little nerve-wracking if you are experiencing severe symptoms, but are unsure if they qualify for an emergency visit. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, these are signs that you should seek emergency eye care immediately:

  • loss of vision
  • eye burning or stinging
  • one eye not moving like the other
  • blood in the white of the eye
  • severe itching
  • decreased or double vision
  • severe headaches
  • discharge from the eye
  • bruising or bleeding around the eye
  • light sensitivity

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, please contact Mitchell Eye Center for an emergency appointment right away.

Most Common Emergency Eye Situations

At Mitchell Eye Center, we typically see six common emergency eye situations. Accidents and unpredictable situations unfortunately happen all the time. That is why if you have experienced one of these situations, you must contact our eye doctor for immediate assistance.

Traumatic Eye Accident: Eye accidents normally involve something hitting the eye or getting into the eye. Severe injuries can result in redness, swelling, pain, double vision, and light sensitivity. It’s important to see your eye doctor if you have experienced a traumatic eye accident because it could result in partial or full blindness.

Foreign Body or Chemical Burn: If something has gotten into your eye or burned your eye, only use water or saline to flush the eye out. Seek medical attention right away.

Vision Changes: If your vision noticeably changes in a short period, seek emergency eye care. This could be a sign of nerve damage, stroke, or other neurological problems.

Red Eye with DischargThe most common cause of red eye with discharge is pink eye or conjunctivitis. Pink eye is contagious and typically viral, although it can be a bacterial infection. To determine the cause and a treatment, please see a doctor to examine your eye.

Bulging Eyes: An injury to the eye socket may result in bulging eyes. However, this symptom can also be the result of a thyroid issue and therefore you must seek medical attention if you notice bulging eyes.

Different Size Pupils: Some patients are born with this eye condition and others develop it after an injury to the eye. If it is a new occurrence, seek medical care to receive a proper diagnosis.
