What are Cataracts?
Cataracts form as a natural part of the aging process within the eye. As you age, the proteins inside your eye’s natural lens begin to break down and clump together, causing it to become cloudy.
The clouding of the lens blocks light from reaching the retina at the back of the eye. When this happens, blurry vision and glare are the typical results.
At first, cataract symptoms may not be very noticeable and can often be managed with frequent prescription changes. However, your cataracts will worsen over time, eventually preventing you from performing your everyday tasks as usual.

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective way to restore your vision, and our cataract surgeon, Dr. Kubal, is very experienced in this procedure.
During cataract surgery, Dr. Kubal will remove your natural lens and replace it with an artificial lens, also known as an intraocular lens or IOL. What is LASIK?
LASIK is a very popular laser refractive procedure that can correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The goal of LASIK is to allow you to live your life with less dependence on visual aids, so you can be more spontaneous and enjoy life without having to deal with the constraint of glasses and contact lenses.
At Mitchell Refractive Surgery and Eye Center, our LASIK surgeon, Dr. Mitchell, has extensive experience and training and uses some of the most advanced techniques and technology available to ensure you have the best visual outcome. During the LASIK procedure, Dr. Mitchell will begin by creating a flap on the surface of your cornea, which is the transparent dome at the front of your eye.
Next, he will reshape the deeper layers of your cornea to correct your natural refractive error. Once the reshaping is complete, he will reposition the corneal flap, which will heal naturally during your recovery.
LASIK is typically a very simple and quick procedure, and many people notice an improvement in their vision within a few days of the surgery. In order to schedule the LASIK procedure, you must first qualify as a candidate.
Good candidates for LASIK are people over eighteen with stable glasses prescriptions. It is also important that your eyes are healthy, you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and that you have corneas that are adequately thick.

What is PRK?
PRK, also known as Photorefractive Keratectomy, is another type of refractive surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors. At Mitchell Refractive Surgery and Eye Center, both Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Kubal are experienced in performing PRK.
During the PRK procedure, the thin outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, is removed to expose the underlying corneal tissue. The laser is then used to reshape the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina and improving vision, similar to LASIK. PRK is an excellent option for patients who are not eligible for LASIK due to thin corneas, dry eyes, or other factors. The procedure has a shorter recovery time than traditional LASIK, and many patients achieve excellent visual results.
Just like with LASIK, you must first qualify as a candidate for PRK before you can schedule the procedure. Good candidates for PRK are also over eighteen years old, have a stable prescription, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
