LASIK can help South Florida residents like you experience clearer vision. NEW! ALL LASER-100% BLADE-FREE!

Using the IntraLase®FS Laser
The IntraLase FS laser is the first 100% blade-free technology used for Lasik surgery, and ranks among one of the most accurate Lasik technologies available today. The Intralase laser is used to perform the critical first step of the Lasik procedure: creating the corneal flap. Dr. Mitchell is currently using this revolutionary technology for patients at his Boca Raton center.

The IntraLase® FS laser differs from the other blade-based technologies in many important ways.
The IntraLase method replaces the hand-held microkeratome blade traditionally used during Lasik surgery with the computer-guided precision of a laser. Prior to IntraLase, this first step was done manually using a hand-held device with an oscillating metal razor blade called a microkeratome. The blade moves back and forth to create a single, one-dimensional cut as it travels across the cornea. However, it can also leave an irregular surface after the corneal flap is lifted, which can affect the quality of your post-operative vision.

Even in skilled hands this device can be unpredictable, causing the majority of Lasik complications. With IntraLase a blade never touches your eye, making Lasik surgery, already one of the safest and most trusted procedures available today, a realistic proposition for those that would benefit greatly from Lasik but may have been previously averse to it.

How Does IntraLase® Work?
The IntraLase laser uses an infrared beam of light to create the corneal flap from below the surface of the cornea using an “inside-out” process, virtually eliminating severe sight-threatening, blade-related complications as a result.

A specialized, highly accurate computer that supports the IntraLase laser directs the process of focusing the beam of laser light to a micro-precise spot of energy, delivering thousands of microscopic water bubbles. Just prior to applying laser vision correction, Dr. Mitchell creates your corneal flap by gently separating the tissue where these bubbles have formed.

IntraLase uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create the corneal flap; each pulse of light passes through the top layers of your cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye. Thousands of these tiny bubbles are precisely positioned to define the flap’s dimensions and distinct beveled edge. The creation of the flap itself only takes about 15-30 seconds per eye

The IntraLase laser then moves back and forth across the eye, creating a tight, precisely positioned layer of bubbles that are then stacked along the edge of the flap just beneath the corneal surface. This creates a smooth, even surface after your corneal flap is lifted; this is done to allow for the second step of the Lasik procedure, where an excimer laser is used on the inner cornea to correct vision. When completed, the flap is accurately repositioned, due to its beveled edge. Including preparation time, the entire Lasik procedure takes approximately 10 minutes.

The 100% Blade-Free IntraLase Method™ – Safe and Effective
Prior to creating the corneal flap, Dr. Mitchell applies drops to numb the eye, and then applies a special ring and an instrument that gently flattens your cornea in preparation for the IntraLase method. Patients have reported feeling only slight pressure during this part of the process. More than 600,000 procedures have been performed

In a clinical survey of Lasik patients who had their corneal flaps created using a microkeratome in one eye and the IntraLase method in the other, the vision in the Intralase-treated eye was preferred 3-to-1.

Other Benefits to Using the IntraLase Method™
More patients in clinical trials achieved vision that was 20/20 or better when their Lasik procedure was performed using the IntraLase method. Patients have also reported an overall improvement in quality of vision, especially regarding their ability to see well in low light, such as at dusk or at night.

Using the Intralase method for your Lasik procedure also allows your doctor to “tailor” the dimensions of your corneal flap based on what’s best for your eye; everything from the circumference and thickness of corneal flap to the angle of its edges can be precisely determined. The incision made by the Intralase laser is pre-programmed into a computer based on the patient’s particular eye shape, as everyone’s is slightly different. This personalized approach allows for customized treatment for each patient, which in turn has resulted in excellent postoperative outcomes.

Intralase technology delivers a degree of safety and accuracy that is unprecedented in Lasik corrective surgery. Peer-reviewed studies and nearly 1,000,000 clinical cases demonstrate the elimination of the most serious sight-threatening complications and prove that the IntraLase method enables superior Lasik outcomes. So when you decide that you want a Lasik procedure that is 100% blade-free, ask Dr. Mitchell for the Intralase Method by name.
