LASIK
or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is the most recent advance
in Laser Vision Correction. LASIK has been performed internationally
for over 10 years and was first performed in the U.S. in 1991 during
clinical trials.
Ophthalmologists have been reshaping the cornea for vision correction for over 50 years. They have been creating protective layers of corneal tissue for over 35 years and have been using the excimer
laser since the 1980's.
In using the highly sophisticated excimer laser, light energy corrects focusing problems by vaporizing away a small amount of tissue from the cornea. This is done with an extreme degree of accuracy to
the submicron level. |
